BW2V installed Incinerators in three healthcare facilities of Nepal
No doubt, waste is everywhere and its management is a worldwide problem. Not only in Urban settings, also in rural areas, waste management has become hands on requirement due to absence of appropriate waste management system in place. The condition of medical waste management in rural Nepal is another big havoc. Most of the hospitals in the rural areas used to dump and ultimately burn the garbage in an open space as they do not have proper treatment facilities within. Burning the infectious waste in open space leads to the emission of toxic fumes and also contaminates the soil and ground water imposing a great threat to living beings and environment.
Taking all these facts into account, BW2V in collaboration with a Germany based NGO, named Technology without Borders (TwB) provided a clean solution i.e. Incinerator (De Montfront Mark 8a) for the disposal of hospital waste in three healthcare facilities of rural Nepal. The team installed one incinerator in each of the health care facilities, namely Tamakoshi Cooperative Hospital, Manthali, Kattike Deurali Health Center, Kavre and Baluwa Health Center, Panchkhal last month to help the centers in environment friendly management of infectious medical waste using the available local resources.
The use of incinerators in burning wastes has been highly appreciated more than decades and recently it has been accumulated towards burning the infectious wastes from healthcare facilities. Many so-called incinerators have been in practice but not with logical considerations of burning wastes and controlled gas emission. However, this De Montfront Mark 8a incinerator has proven to control harmful gases with two chambers installed in it. One chamber is used for burning wastes with as high temperature as more than 800°C and another works on burning the environmentally harmful gases.
The main theme of this project was to build the incinerator that can attain temperature of 1000°C, so that the toxic gases like dioxin and furans are not emitted or less emitted. The incinerators worked according to the principle and the team managed to burn the wastes from the health facilities within the expected temperature.
After installing incinerators in each healthcare facilities, the team demonstrated the procedure of waste burning and handing the whole incinerator unit, giving hands-on-training to the hospital staffs.
